Wednesday 14 June 2023 - Nr Sveg to Hoting

Extremely quiet night, even the little road traffic almost inaudible. We could have been miles from anywhere - hang on we were miles from anywhere! So up to another breathless and sunny morning, although the flies etc were also up and about so screens remained firmly shut. Nothing to do apart from breakfast so we got on the road again by 10.30.

We appeared to miss a turn in Sveg for the E45, which we've since discovered is known as the Inlandsvargen as per the many signposts we've noticed, and it wasn't until TomTom and signposts gave us a sudden right turn "towards" the E45 that we realised our mistake. As it turned out this was a far nicer and quieter road, and maybe shorter which is why perhaps TomTom hadn't turned us earlier. It was very pretty with lots of, you've guessed it, trees and lakes with even a couple of views of snow-capped mountains in the distance. We eventually got back onto the E45 and stopped at Svenstavik where there was a m/h service point, unfortunately without any means of payment so their loss. We did spend some money in the supermarket however and managed to "break" the silly SKr500 notes the ATM had given us, so we're not too conscience-stricken (again!). Spotted our first UK registered van since Gravelines but did not have a chance to chat so no idea who/why/where. Lunch then moved on.

Then TomTom started trying to turn us onto side-roads to nowhere and back again, did this repeatedly despite resetting the route so for now just used him as a speedometer and camera warning device, again of which there were lots. Swedish drivers tend to be very law-abiding about speed limits, constantly driving at 5kph below them, which is all well and good but extremely frustrating when you're trying to get a move on. We calculated we still had 12 hours driving to reach Narvik, the start of our planned tour so looks like Saturday.

Past Ostersund and Stromsund (not actually spelt that way but my keyboard is UK not Swedish so it'll have to do) we were about ready to stop although we could really have done with being further along. However we noticed that recognised places were becoming sparse so really were quite happy when we found a small and lovely parking area/picnic spot on the edge of Hoting and tucked ourselves into a corner. A number of vans have been and gone but we're not aware of any restrictions so have decided to overnight here.

View from our pitch (plus dog!)
