Sunday 18 June 2023 - Kiruna to Nr Narvik

121 miles

Yet another bright sunny and rapidly warming up day, we're in no particular rush today so bacon sarnis for breakfast using a pack we bought in Denmark - it was okay but very fatty, but that's what makes it tasty, yes? Cleared up and finished packing away, say bye-bye to our Swedish neighbours then down to the service point for a full domestic. Our plan today is head for Narvik in Norway so we can get the gas bottles topped up then overnight somewhere as the gas station is closed on Sunday.

TomTom in control with Nellie backing him up, we had a superb trip through amazing scenery, as well as 2/3 minutes of heavy rain which came out of nowhere! Snow sprinkled mountains, forests and huge flat calm lakes, some still frozen around almost every corner. Bren was busy with the camera and got some nice piccies, but of course they never do the real thing justice.

Breezed straight through the border, nobody interested in the nice new worming entry in Jamies' passport, but at least we've done the right thing and are legal. Lots of places to pull in and admire the view on this stretch so we took advantage of one for a lazy lunch. Many of them were emminently suitable for wild camping and indeed several were apparently being well utilised for that purpose but first we thought we'd check out the gas place in Narvik, just in case.

Narvik is basically a port town shipping the iron ore being railroaded in from Kiruna but it is still clean, tidy and modern, in fact a bit bland really but of course very quiet on a Sunday afternoon where everything is shut. Including the gas place! Oh well, never mind, we'll just continue with our plan and found a promising candidate on Park4Night so set TomTom for there.

Whilst in Narvik thought we'd get some Norwegian currency so found an ATM which of course was out or order, but there was another across the road (wait for the lights, no jaywalking in Norway!) so mission accomplished.

We kept clear of the toll bridge (the one in the photos) this time and found our chosen spot which was almost idyllic - beautiful view along the fjord to the bridge, a nice stoney beach for Jamie and plenty of room. No services of course, not even a rubbish bin, but we'd planned for that anyway. The beach was currently being enjoyed by many locals having a nice Sunday afternoon, swimming, paddle-boarding and even a barbie or two going. As the day wore on they dwindled but were replaced by more motorhomes and campers - last count was over a dozen but there's plenty of room.

The road is currently very quiet but the app mentioned it was busy with trucks, obviously not today but looking at the map it is a route avoiding the toll bridge so maybe noisier tomorrow.
